Synopsis Seussical – the Musical, by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens was a Broadway hit in 2000 – 2001. It is an exuberant and sweet-natured celebration of the classic works of Theodore Geisl, (AKA Dr Seuss), with plenty of joy, humour and thought-provoking challenge for adults and young audiences alike (as indeed are the books themselves – give them a read again sometime!) With the Cat in the Hat as MC and catalyst (pun intended) for all of the chaotic fun that follows, the writers have based the musical on Dr Seuss’ two Horton stories – one recently revisited in the Dreamworks film, “Horton Hears a Who”, in which Horton the Elephant discovers a tiny civilisation clinging to life on a speck of dust, and declaring “A person’s a person, no matter how small”, defends it against the prejudices of those who cannot believe or imagine the existence of people so tiny. The second story, “Horton Hatches the Egg”, has Horton again held up to ridicule, but continuing to prove his integrity and steadfastness, when he agrees to “egg-sit” for an irresponsible bird who abandons her nest. Into these stories are woven a cast of characters from many beloved Dr Seuss classics, with references to and elements of at least fifteen other stories. The show revels in the quirky, catchy and clever wordplay of Dr Seuss, as well as his values, including friendship, courage, loyalty, the significance of every person, and the power of the imagination – and the score is as joyous and imaginative as the work deserves. Synopsis - Wikipedia The overarching plot of the show mirrors that of Horton Hears a Who!, centering on Horton the elephant's endeavors to protect the people of Who-ville, who live on a tiny speck of dust. It also features characters and scenarios from many other Seuss books, including the Butter Side Uppers / Downers from The Butter Battle Book, Gertrude McFuzz, and some characters that never made an appearance in any of Dr. Seuss's books. The Cat in the Hat, an outside observer, acts as narrator and devil's advocate throughout the show, briefly leaping into the action on several occasions to create conflict and keep the story moving.
